Winter Games Rx for Cabin Fever

As we all go back to our daily grinds after a delightful Winter Games Weekend, just wanted to reflect. For those of us that suffer from cabin fever, it felt like a ten minute break to bask in the light, amidst what seems a very long season of darkness.

You rugged snowmobile fans, inspire the rest of us who whine and complain as the winter winds blow in more snow.  Instead you cheer, MORE SNOW!

We on the other hand, surrender to the weatherman and misguided environmentalists who tell us to stay inside, stay home, stay safe.

You are the rare breed. You cloak yourselves in an armor of winter outdoor dress, which makes you unrecognizable as individuals. You go bravely, challenging Mother Nature, “Bring it on!”

As a group, you band together to make things happen. You unite to fight the good fight; to preserve the right for not only you but for the children and grandchildren, to continue the tradition of being outdoor sport enthusiasts.

Poinsett Pounders’ Snowmobile Club, we seriously applaud your efforts and appreciate the winter memories you provide for all of in the Poinsett Area Lakes Region, year after year.

The annual Poinsett Pounders Ice fishing Tournament is this Friday, on Lake Poinsett from 10 am. to 3pm.

Letter from U.S. Senator Thune of South Dakota

Thune Celebrates Pheasant Hunting

Senator Thune joined his brother Tim and father Harold near Draper for opening weekend of pheasant hunting.

As the pheasant hunting season kicked off in South Dakota, Senator Thune took time to spend opening day hunting with his brother and father near their hometown of Murdo. Pheasant hunting is a time-honored South Dakota tradition that calls together friends and family throughout the state to enjoy a pastime carried on from generation to generation.   

 

Recognizing the importance of hunting to South Dakotans and the state’s economy, Senator Thune is a proud cosponsor of the Sportsmen’s Act (S. 1335). The Sportsmen’s Act contains provisions to make federal land more accessible to recreational hunters and fishermen and includes legislation Thune introduced which prohibits expensive federal regulations regarding the use of lead ammunition and fishing tackle. The Sportsmen’s Act also clarifies current law to specifically allow hunting bows to be transported across National Park Service land.  

 

As South Dakotans gather at favorite pheasant hunting locations, take the newest family hunter out for the first day in the fields, or gather over a warm evening meal to tell stories of the “shot of the day,” hunters and their families continue these treasured South Dakota traditions and instill an appreciation for nature and the outdoors in the next generation of hunters. Senator Thune wishes all hunters across South Dakota a safe and successful hunting season.

Golf on Snow ~ SNOLF Tournament this Weekend

SNOLF begins Saturday at 1pm, with registration of the 3-5 person teams. $5 entry fee per person. 100% payout and additional door prizes for all participants. Bring your own club and a tennis ball. Gathering in LAKEVIEW for snacks, refreshments (including the traditional drink of the day, the "Klondike Bar") and awarding of prizes around 3:30pm.

What you need to know to participate:
1. Registration is at 1:00 pm. on a 'first come' basis. Don't be late.
2. Come dressed to be outside for a couple of hours or more. (Using the bathroom before you go out is recommended).
3. Come ready for a fun-filled event. Having a DD lined up is a good idea, as drinking is encouraged. Forget your cares for a day and just have fun with it.
4. Teamwork and good sportsmanship is required of all players.
5. Each SNOLFer should bring one golf club and a tennis ball and a $5.00 registration fee. Get your team together or come solo to join up with a team.
6. Snowmobiles and ATVs make great golf carts to get around on the snow and ice covered 'course'.
7. No whining.

Looks like the weather will cooperate this year - a great day for winter fun on the lake.
Spectators (window lickers) are welcome come out and join in the fun!

Ice Fishin' Northern Pike-Love 'Em or (S)Not

Fishing for Walleye and Perch? Whether you love 'em or are annoyed by them, Northern Pike are part of ice fishing. Yes, they are slimy, snotty line takers but we're here to share some ideas to make them a little more palatable.

Northern is delicious eating if you can serve it boneless. It takes some extra time, but well worth the effort especially with the larger fish. Cook it using your favorite recipe and you just may agree, it can be as good as eating fresh Walleye.

If you are a fan of Pickled Herring, you will love Pickled Pike. For this recipe, don't worry about the bones. You can even use the smaller 'snake' Northerns, as the bones 'dissolve' during the process.

Pickled Pike
Use glass, not metal ware.
5 C. water
1 C. salt
Clean fish. Cut into bite-sized chunks. Put pike into a jar of water & salt and refrigerate for 48 hours. Tip over or shake jar a couple of times. Drain, clean and rinse the jar and the fish.
Place fish back into jar. Pour clear vinegar over fish and re-refrigerate for another 48 hours. Again tip or shake the jar after every 8 hours or so.
Drain and throw away this vinegar. Rinse out the jar.
Thinly slice an onion.
Make a brine of the following ingredients and boil for 5 minutes. Cool.
2 C. vinegar
4 whole bay leaves
2 tsp. mustard seed
1 tsp. whole allspice
1 tsp. whole pepper
1 tsp. whole cloves
1-1/2 C. sugar
½ C. white Port Wine
Alternate fish and onion, pack in jar. Pour brine over each layer, saving some for over the top.
Can be eaten within a few days. All bones should have dissolved. To fill a gallon jar, I use 1.5x all the ingredients listed.
