latest lake level report

>
> August was good for evaporation and water outflow on Poinsett. Monday
> night the lake received from .75- 1.2 inches of rain. The upper
> watershed received on average about 1.5 inches however spots by Bryant
> were at 3.00 inches. Most of the watershed was in the condition to
> absorb that rain, and I expected only a small uptick in the Dolph Creek
> flow to reach Lake Norden by the Labor Day weekend. Last night (WED) it
> again rained with reports on west side of Lake Poinsett of 1.2 inches,
> but the watershed to north and especially west received upwards of 3.6
> inches. Hayti's two rain total was 5.2 inches, 2 west of Lake Norden two
> rain total of 4.2 inches. As a result Lake Marsh and Lake Norden were
> visibly higher this morning and small streams were flowing hard and
> major creeks going higher all morning.
> The elevations this morning downstream still reveal the drop we were
> experiencing with all lakes through the last two weeks. The Big Sioux
> River had a rather small jump in flow above Poinsett outlet from rain,
> but the river is forcast to reach flood stage again in Brookings county
> going from 1500 cfs to over 4000 cfs within the next few days. Both the
> upper flow and ability to find room downstream will probably end up in
> Poinsett outflows slowing again. Not what we want to happen.

Official update on the area water levels
> From: Smith, Richard - Hayti, SD [mailto:richard.smith@sd.nacdnet.net]
> Sent: Monday, August 09, 2010 1:05 PM
> Subject: Aug 9 2010 (8/9/10) Poinsett updated water
>
> Water levels are heading in the right direction. Conditions for BIG
> Rains still exist. Very humid and hot with Heat Index to 105-110 range
> projected.
> Poinsett has lowered 8-10 inches from summer peak, but still much
> concern if wind blows. With Big Sioux River water levels dropping in
> Brookings county below and Codington county above the outflow from
> Poinsett has picked up considerably over 2 weeks ago.
> Lake Marsh has grudgingly receded enough that the County is considering
> opening highway north of Hayti to light traffic (it feels like driving
> on a trampoline). The drive-in area at Lake Norden is nearly cleared out
> of water, but park still has standing water.
> Lake Albert is down about a foot and lake Marsh 6 inches from July peak
> level.

Fireworks Display at LAKEVIEW cancelled!
After a long held tradition (10 years) of having a fireworks display at dusk on the 4th of July, we regret to announce, due to a lack of cooperation from Mother Nature, there will be no fireworks from LAKEVIEW Resort this year.

Every 4th LAKEVIEW Resort joins the rest of Lake Poinsett at dark as we all 'shoot off' fireworks. LAKEVIEW's display is always exceptional with the help of the crew from RON'S FIREWORKS. You can purchase your own fireworks from their stand in the parking lot next to LAKEVIEW. Happy "lighting up the sky" weekend. Be safe and have a blast!!! Seldom heard verse to the National Anthem

SANDBAGGING AGAIN!!
Recent rains coupled with high winds, have some lake property lovers scurrying to sandbag again to protect their property! Water continues to rush in from the west and the now the river is too full to take in any more water from Poinsett. Hoping for the foretasted rains to miss us here.
